Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42 ESV)
Mary and Martha’s situation is relevant in our age. Most of us find ourselves distracted by work, education, marriage, entertainment and other social stuff rather than spending quality time with God. Some of us in leadership position can be distracted by our leadership duties instead of spending quality time with God.
It’s good to lead, it’s good for one to perform their life responsibilities but one thing is necessary than all these and that is sitting at Jesus’s feet just as Mary did – seeking Him through the word and prayer.
Life or leadership responsibilities can be demanding sometimes but these things cannot lead us to eternity. One thing that has eternal value is genuinely seeking God and that is what Mary portrayed in Luke 10:38-42.
It is easy to be distracted in this age by social media and other things that turn away our attention from God thus spending less quality time or no time with Him. I am convicted by this too- most times I think about the cares of life or planning for the future rather than meditating on God’s word.
I am not saying ignore the responsibilities that life or leadership comes with or sit at home reading and praying 24/7 but we need to find a balance between seeking Him and getting on with life.
Brethren, let’s be like Mary who chose the good portion by sitting under Jesus’s feet, spend quality time with Him!
