Either You Kill Sin or Sin will Kill You

Either You Kill Sin or Sin will Kill You

Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. (1 Peter 2:11, 12, 16 NIV)

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:7, 8 NIV)

For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. (Romans 6:14 NIV)

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (Galatians 5:16-18 NIV)

There were three snipers that were sent on a mission to kill the enemies of the state. When they got to the mission ground, one of the snipers never aimed at the target and eventually got killed by the enemy, the second one aimed at the target but never fired a shot and also got killed, the third one aimed at the target, shot the enemies till they were dead and he survived.

The explanation to this story is, part of our aim as Christians is to kill sin and continue to fight against it. Sin is the enemy, the word of God is the gun, and the bullets are made up of the reading, application of the word of God and prayer. Finally is the will power to kill sin daily until we join our Savior and king is by Grace.

Some that claim to be Christians are like the first sniper, they have the word but don’t study it and pray. Therefore, they have made the desires of the flesh rule over desires of the spirit, allowing sin to have dominion over them instead of them having dominion over sin, which is very dangerous.

Some are like the second sniper who aimed at the target but never fired. They read and study the word but they are not living the word to kill the sin in them. These people are theoretical Christians and not practical Christians.

Others are like the sniper who aims at the target, fires the enemy till death and overcomes.

As Christians we should have the attitude of this sniper. We should continue to read the word, live the word always and walk under the grace and holiness of God to kill the sin in us and the desires in us that make us want to sin. Through this we have dominion over sin, rather than sin having dominion over us. This type of Christians put their faith to work and thus bearing good fruit. As James 2:17 so rightly says, faith without works is dead.

Brethren, if you let sin have dominion over you, it will kill you but if you have dominion over sin by the Grace of God you will live.

It is my prayer we read the word, apply the word, walk under God’s Grace and holiness to kill the sinful desires in us.
