To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:20, 21 ESV)
In this world, we will encounter people that love us and people that hate us. If everyone in this world likes you then there is a problem. As believers we will have people who love us because of our faith and people who hate us because of our faith.
Nonetheless, we cannot fight hatred with hatred, it doesn’t even make sense to do so. What we ought to do is fight hatred with is love. Because love is greater than hate, love will eventually win.
Romans 12:20 tells us to show love to our enemies because through love, guilt will surface and lead them to repent and learn how to love.
Fighting hatred with hatred is like attempting to quench fire with petrol – the fire will only burn more. On the contrary, fighting hatred with love is like quenching fire with water where by the water succeeds in quenching the fire.
God did not fight our rebellion against Him with hatred but fought it with love through the offering of Christ, setting a great example to us as His children.
Brethren, although it is human nature to fight hatred with hatred, it is my prayer we fight hatred with love through the supernatural help of the Holy Spirit.
