Kindness

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (‭Galatians‬ ‭5‬:‭22-23‬ ESV)

The Greek word for “kindness” ischrēstotēs. It means “benignity, tender concern, uprightness.” It is kindness of heart and kindness of act.

True kindness can be found in God, God giving us His son Jesus Christ to save us from sin and His wrath is the greatest act of kindness ever. God is kind and He wants His children to be kind also and for His children to be kind is by the spontaneous work of the Holy Spirit in us.

The worldly type of kindness is the kindness shown to only those we know or love but the godly type of kindness is the type of kindness shown to everyone without any favouritism or motives behind it. The godly type of kindness goes beyond our comfort zone.

Benefits of being kind

1. It can save a life

Our act of kindness can save someone’s life. An example is the work of various NGO’s in deprived areas around the world. Their act of kindness are saving lives, we can also save lives by being kind towards the homeless, the poor, the needy and offering help to others suffering from all sort of addictions. The story of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37 is also an example of a life saving story through the act of kindness.

2. Leads others to Christ

Being kind towards others is a way of sharing God’s love that we have experienced with others. Through that we are able to reach others with the gospel and by His will they can be saved.

3. It is a blessing

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” (‭Acts‬ ‭20‬:‭35‬ NIV)

It is not only the people that receives kind acts that are blessed but the one showing the act of kindness is blessed also. It is a command from God for His children to do good (Deuteronomy 15:11) therefore in obeying God’s command is accompanied with His blessings.

Brethren, it is my prayer we ask God to help us bear this fruit of kindness. Amen
