“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21 ESV)
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Luke 12:34 ESV)
Reading these scriptures today, two questions came into mind and they are outlined below.
Firstly, what is my treasure?
A treasure can defined as a very valuable object or a much loved and valued person. Based on this definition of a treasure, what you do cherish most or whom you do value most in your life?
If you value money, gold and silver possession or you value man (i.e. boyfriend/family/husband and etc) most in this life then your treasures are worldly treasures. Worldly treasures are perishable and have no heavenly value.
If God, His word and the things of God are most important in your life than any other person or possessions, your treasures are heavenly, imperishable and have value.
As Christians the most loved and valued person in our life should be God and the most valued possession in our life should be His word. This is because these are the only treasures with value.
Secondly, where is my treasure?
Worldly treasures can only be found in this world and enjoyed in this world but come with eternal suffering. Heavenly treasures can be found in God and His word which comes with eternal peace and joy.
As it says in scripture “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also”. Therefore the location of your treasure determines where the heart resides.
Worldly treasures set the heart to desire for worldly things which cause men and women to covet, lust and to commit all manners of sin to keep those treasures or increase them. The dangerous thing is that it leads to eternal damnation.
Heavenly treasures set the heart on Godly things which are good, kind, pure and holy which comes with eternal peace and joy.
Brethren lets seek for heavenly things that are of value and imperishable and it is my prayer we all do so in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
